Antique Family Portrait in Carved Wood Frame, Germany

This antique, carved wood frame with German family portrait will make a real statement on your wall! The wooden frame is carved in the style of Germany's Black Forest, and is of course the star, but the ca. 1870s family portrait adds a touch a panache. The entire family has turned out for this portrait - possibly a cabinet card - with women in period dress, one of the men wearing military uniform, a little boy in something like a sailor suit, and even the family dog. the picture seems to date to the 1860s- 1880s based on the dress of the women, and the frame is perhaps slightly more modern: the 1890s-1900s. The frame measures a very generous 23" / 59 cm wide and 19.25" / 49 cm high. The opening (with glass) is about 15.75" / 40 cm wide and 12" / 30 cm wide. The frame is hand carved from one piece to look like four separate pieces of old, worn wood. The artist has even added faux wormholes. The top of the frame is accented with several leaves.
 
The frame itself is in good condition for its age. It is a bit dusty from storage and could use a touch of wood oil to freshen it up. I've not done so since many people prefer the rustic / primitive look that only decades can bring. The glass also appears to be in good condition. The heavyweight photo mat is embossed with a geometric key design, and is spotted with age. The portion of the family portrait which is visible is 8.5" by 6.75" / 22 cm by 17 cm with rounded corners. The backing of the frame is also wood, professional done with beveled edges, and held in place with nails. There are some scratches, paint residue and other markings here, only visible from the back or perhaps underneath. Overall, and amazing collectible and one-of-a-kind wall artwork!
